Homeowner’s Brief

Our clients wanted to make better use of the space alongside their swimming pool, creating a permanent outdoor area where they could relax, entertain and spend more time outside throughout the warmer months. The setting already had plenty of character, so the new structure needed to feel like a natural extension of the garden rather than something overly formal or enclosed.

Shelter was an important part of the brief. They wanted somewhere that would allow long afternoons by the pool to continue comfortably into the evening, while offering protection from strong sun, light rain and the changeable British weather. At the same time, the space still needed to feel open and connected to its surroundings, with a strong sense of craftsmanship and materials that would improve with age.

The aim was to create something permanent, characterful and relaxed: a focal point beside the pool that could be used equally well for quiet afternoons, family gatherings or entertaining friends.

Our Response

NTS designed and built a traditional oak-framed pavilion that complemented both the garden and the existing pool area. The structure was set on saddle stones and finished with a pitched roof clad in lightweight cedar shingles, bringing together natural materials that allowed the pavilion to sit comfortably within its surroundings.

The open-sided design provides practical shelter without losing the feeling of being outdoors, creating a shaded and protected space that remains visually connected to the pool and wider garden. The exposed oak frame gives the pavilion warmth and architectural character, while the cedar roof adds texture and helps soften the overall appearance.

At the same time, we also constructed the adjoining brick garden room, allowing the two buildings to be considered together rather than as separate additions. Their scale, materials and positioning were carefully balanced so they formed a cohesive part of the garden.

Several years on, the oak has weathered beautifully and developed even more character. The result is a warm, timeless poolside setting that gives the homeowners a comfortable place to relax, dine and entertain outdoors for much more of the year.

Notes from the field

Oak changes beautifully over time, and this project shows that especially well. The timber and cedar have gradually weathered into their surroundings, helping the pavilion feel even more settled, natural and at home beside the pool.
