Homeowner’s Brief

Our client wanted to create a dedicated space where a much-loved personal art collection could be properly displayed and enjoyed. With limited opportunity to showcase the pieces within the main house, the new building needed to offer far more than simple storage. The ambition was to create a calm, considered environment that felt more like a private gallery than a conventional garden room.

Maintaining the right conditions throughout the year was particularly important, with stable temperatures needed to help protect the collection from significant seasonal changes. At the same time, the space needed to feel comfortable and inviting enough to spend time in. The client wanted to be able to sit among the artwork, move naturally through the collection and enjoy the pieces as part of the garden setting, rather than simply keeping them safely out of sight.

Our Response

NTS designed and built a bespoke oak-clad garden building that combined the character of a beautifully crafted structure with the environmental performance required for displaying artwork throughout the year. Upgraded insulation was incorporated throughout the building, together with carefully considered temperature controls and underfloor heating, helping to maintain a comfortable and more consistent internal environment across the changing seasons.

A pitched roof gives the building a generous sense of height and character, while integrated Velux roof windows bring additional natural light into the gallery without compromising the clean, uncluttered feel of the walls. Internally, the layout was designed to create a gentle journey from one end of the space to the other, allowing individual pieces to be appreciated without the room feeling crowded.

The result is a peaceful private gallery that sits naturally within the garden: a space designed not simply to house the collection, but to make it part of everyday life.

Notes from the field

This project needed more than good insulation. Stable temperatures, controlled heating and carefully considered natural light were all essential to creating a calm, gallery-like environment where the artwork could be enjoyed comfortably throughout the year
